Total RNA was extracted from 10 0.5-g aliquots of uranium-contaminated sediment samples by bead ruptor (bead beater) extraction in 2-ml cryo tubes for 3 min at the maximum speed (~5,000 oscillations min−1). The tubes were chilled briefly on ice and centrifuged at 12,000 × g at 4°C for 3 min to remove the beads and sediment.
