On the day of analysis, after thawing, cartilage samples were washed in ice-cold 20 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.4, and blotted on absorbent paper. Each sample was then minced in ice-cold 20 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.4  and homogenised in a 1: 10 (w/v) ratio with a rotor stator homogenizer (ultra-turrax).
