Heavily infected THP-1 cells (8 × 107 cells) were harvested by centrifugation at 2,000 × g for 5 min. The pellet was resuspended in 8 ml of culture medium and sonicated on ice twice at setting 2 for 10 s using an ultrasonic homogenizer (sonicator), and the unbroken cells and cell debris were removed by centrifugation at 4,000 × g for 5 min.
