Six- to eight-week-old female BALB/cAnNCrlBR mice were each infected with 1 × 106 Erdman bacilli in 200 μl of PBS by intravenous inoculation. Just prior to injection, mycobacteria from a frozen vial for which the concentration (CFU per milliliter) was known were thawed and added to 4 ml of PBS in a 15-ml conical tube. The suspension was then sonicated for 5 s at 60% output with an ultrasonic homogenizer (sonicator) before inversion and sonication again for 10 s.
