To assay bacterial colonization, the first 4 cm of the distal colon starting from the anal verge was collected. Colonic tissue and fecal pellets were homogenized using a rotor stator (polytron) tissue homogenizer. 

Probe: 7mm saw tooth or Omni Tip plastic probes
